Bitumen
Polymer modified bitumen is increasingly used in road surfacing because it is more elastic and durable, and has less sensitivity to temperature extremes than conventional bitumen. Unmodified bitumen becomes brittle and cracks in cold conditions and softens at higher temperatures, causing rutting and surface deformation.
One of the most common polymer modifiers is styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS). It has a hard yet elastic structure and is difficult to disperse and solubilise.
